Dark before the Dawn (Kevin/Scotty) 1/?

A/N- Hey everyone! So this is my first Brothers and Sisters fic so please be kind! There are so few fics out there in this fandom, and even less longer length ones, so I figured what the hell, I’d settle down and write one myself:D I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try to update every other day or so!

Disclaimer- Don’t own, never will. If it were mine, at least half the show would be dedicated to Kevin and Scotty scenes.

Warnings- This is Slash. If you don’t like it, well, no ones forcing you to read it. I will be dealing with some sensitive topics in this fic (such as domestic abuse and homophobia) but nothing too graphic. I hope no one gets offended.

Hope you enjoy!

Chapter one- Stranger from the Past

Scotty half heartedly rolled his eyes as Kevin opened the passenger side door of his car for him. He looked up at his husband and gave him a little smile.

“You know, I do know how to open my own doors.”

Kevin gave Scotty a mock shocked look. “Really? I had no clue…”

Scotty nodded. “Oh ya, I’m talented like that.”

Kevin just grinned and took Scotty’s hand, loosely intertwining their fingers as they made their way through the front doors of the restaurant.

As they waited for the maitre de Kevin lifted Scotty’s hand to him mouth and pressed a soft kiss to his palm. “I love you, you know.”

Scotty blushed a little. “I know. And not that I’m complaining but what’s with all the PDA tonight?”

Kevin shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess I’m just happy. It’s been a pretty good day after all.”

“It has, hasn’t it?” Scotty cocked his head to one side. “You really should take more days off. It’s not good for you to be working all the time.”

“Try telling that to Robert. I’m pretty sure that contract I signed with him said that he now owns my soul.”

Scotty smirked. “You love it. You know you do.”

“Maybe. But I swear to God if he finds out, someone will be sleeping on the couch for a week.”

Scotty just smiled. He was about to make a retort but the maitre de finally came back to seat them.

Scotty’s eyes leisurely scanned the crowd of people already seated as they made their way to their own table. He smiled at the sight of an elderly couple, still so clearly in love, holding hands over their meals. He couldn’t help but wonder if Kevin and him were still going to be like that when they were that age or if the spark that was burning bright right now would eventually diminish with time. He hoped not.

Scotty took a seat at the table and looked up at the waiter as he spoke to them. “And here are your menus. Can I get either of you something to drink? I can recommend an excellent wine if you wish?”

Scotty saw Kevin smile as he gave the name of a wine to the waiter. Once he was gone he reached over and took his husbands hand in his own.

“Thanks for tonight Kev. It means a lot to me.”

“And you mean a lot to me.”

Scotty blushed. It was rare that Kevin was in such a romantic mood and he planned on making the most of it. Just as he was about to say something to Kevin a collection of loud laughs could be heard from the corner. He looked over in the direction of the noise and almost instantly could feel his heart skip a beat.

In the corner of his mind he could hear Kevin mutter something about the noise and inconsiderate people but at the moment he couldn’t focus on anything but the man in the corner.

He was average looking enough, light blond hair, dark eyes, a bit on the muscular side. He was sitting beside an attractive woman and another couple who Scotty couldn’t help but noticed looked like they had already had a few to many drinks that night.

But that wasn’t what bothered him. Not at all. He couldn’t care less who the man was with or how drunk they were. He could only focus on the man in question himself.

Subconsciously he bit his lip and started gently chewing on it, a habit he thought he had gotten rid of years go. Without warning the man looked in his direction and their eyes locked. Scotty clenched his fists together as the man smirked at him.

He abruptly stood up almost upturning the table.

Kevin looked at him with concern in his eyes. “Scotty? What’s wrong?”

Scotty looked down at Kevin. “Oh, umm. Nothing. I’ll, I’ll be right back.”

Kevin looked taken aback. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

Scotty roughly shook his head up and down. “Ya, promise. I’ll be right back. I just have to, uh, wash my hands.”

Kevin gave him a questioning look but gestured towards the bathroom nonetheless. “Alright. I’ll be here.”

Scotty, without even waiting for Kevin to finish speaking, made his way to the bathroom.

Once there he leaned against the cool bathroom counter and stared into his reflection. After a few calming breathes he turned on the cold water and splashed a little on his face.

He thought back to the man, the man he thought he had left behind in Arizona, and shivered. He couldn’t deal with this right now. Not when everything with Kevin was going so right.

“Never thought I’d have the, pleasure, of meeting up with you again Scotty.”

Scotty squeezed his eyes shut for a moment before turning around and looking at the man who had evidently followed him.

“What do you want. Why are you even here?” His voice came out no louder than a whisper.

“Why do you always assume I want something Scotty? Besides, I didn’t even know that this is where you lived now. I must admit though, it is quite the nice surprise.”

“Just leave me alone. It’s a big city, I’m sure if we try hard enough we can avoid running into each other.”

The man took a step closer and leered at him. “But what if I want to run into you Scotty?”

Scotty, exasperated, flung his arms out. “I have a life now Matt! I’m married and have a great job and I’m finally happy! Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

Matt gave Scotty a disgusted look. “Didn’t know they were letting faggots marry each other nowadays. Besides, didn’t know a whore like you would ever settle down with one man.”

Scotty could feel his eyes filling up with tears. “Just leave me alone, please. I never did anything to you, not now and most certainly not then.”

Matt took a few steps closer and glared down at the smaller man, harshly grabbing Scotty around his arms. “That’s where you’re wrong. You almost ruined my life Wandell. Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone came along and ruined yours for you now?”

The two locked eyes for a minute before Scotty twisted and broke away. Without a backwards glance he walked out of the bathroom and up to his table.

“Kevin come on. We need to leave. Now.”

Kevin looked up surprised. “What? What are you talking about?”

“Please Kevin, we’ll talk at home. But for now, can we please just get out of here.”

Kevin, noting the redness of Scotty’s eyes, quickly stood up. “Of course” He handed Scotty the keys to the car. “Wait in the car, I’ll just go pay for this.”

Scotty looked down at the keys before looking up at his husband. “I’d uh, rather wait here with you if that’s alright.”

Kevin looked like he was going to question Scotty but at the last moment thought better of it. He carefully put his hand on the small of Scotty’s back and started walking towards the front.

If Kevin thought that it was odd that Scotty not only didn’t protest not paying the bill but also that he allowed himself to be led around, he was wise enough not to breath a word of it.
