Chapter Two- Coming Home
Kevin watched Scotty carefully as he made his way over to the couch and tiredly collapsed down upon it. He walked over behind the couch and gently put his hands on Scotty’s neck and started to knead out the tension that had gathered there. It wasn’t like Scotty to get like this so he couldn’t help but worry about what went on at the restaurant.
“Scotty? Are you ready to talk about it?”
Scotty let out a small moan as Kevin touched a tender spot on his neck before he started to talk. “Uh, nothing. Really, I’m fine.”
“You’re not fine. I’ve never seen you look so terrified.”
“Just drop it. It’s over with.”
Kevin stopped rubbing Scotty’s neck and just looked at him. “Please Scotty. You’re my husband. You can tell me anything.”
Scotty abruptly stood up and turned around to look at Kevin. “I said drop it! I told you it was nothing so can we please just move on?”
Kevin looked startled at Scotty’s outburst but nodded nonetheless. “Uh, fine. Sure, whatever you want.” Without waiting for a response Kevin walked over to their bedroom and closed the door.
Once inside Kevin took a seat at the edge of the bed and rubbed his hands over his tired face. If Scotty honestly thought he’d just drop the issue, he had another thing coming. He began to undress himself while he listened to Scotty outside in the loft.
He heard the sound of a cabinet door open, the tap turn on and back off again, before hearing the clink of a glass being set down.
He was just getting himself settled in under the covers as the bedroom door open and Scotty came walking in. Wordlessly, he made his way over to the bed and took a seat beside where Kevin was propped up against the headboard.
Kevin watched silently as Scotty took a deep breath before beginning to speak. “It happened years ago, before I had even met you. I was really short on cash and had convinced my parents to let me stay with them in Arizona. My mother was less than thrilled but my dad seemed pretty okay with it. Everything was going so well. I didn’t have a boyfriend at the time, which let me tell you, made my parents entirely too thrilled. I don’t think they’ll ever give up hope that one day I may just wake up straight, decide this whole gay thing was just a phase.”
Kevin reached over and laid a comforting hand on Scotty’s thigh. Scotty gave him a tight smile before continuing.
“Anyways, I was getting bored. I managed to find a part time job at a bakery in town but it wasn’t enough to keep me busy all the time. Then I met Matt.”
Kevin couldn’t help but ask. “Matt? You’ve never mentioned a Matt before.”
“There was a reason for that. He was so sweet at first. He came in one morning to buy a cake for his mother and he was just so…adorable, I guess. I was smitten so when he came in a few days later and asked about a date I was ecstatic. When time came for us to go out on our date everything seemed perfect but for some reason he didn’t want it to happen in town. I suppose that should have been my first clue.” Scotty gave a frustrated sigh. “I was so damn stupid.”
Kevin shuffled closer to Scotty and placed an arm around him, gently rubbing soothing strokes up and down his arm. “You’re not stupid Scotty. You’re trusting, there’s a difference.”
Scotty gave a nervous laugh. “Not in this case there wasn’t. Anyways, we drove for about an hour until we reached this town, I don’t even remember the name of it anymore, and we found a little place to have dinner. I loved it but Matt kept looking around nervously, almost as if he was afraid someone would catch him there with me. At this point I was just so happy to be dating again that I didn’t think much of it. We went out a few times after that and it seemed to still be going pretty good, but it was always out of town. It was like he was paranoid or ashamed of me or something! Hell, even the first time we made love it was at a hotel 2 hours away!”
Kevin could tell Scotty was getting worked up and close to tears so he gently reached over and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. He murmured soft meaningless words until Scotty calmed down.
“Thanks. I’m so sorry Kevin.”
“Don’t be, you have nothing to be sorry for. Do you feel up to telling me the rest?”
Scotty nodded. “If I stop now I don’t think I’ll ever start again. Anyways, I was getting pretty sick of all the sneaking around so I decided to surprise him at work one day. He was a business man in town so I dropped by the office one night to bring him some coffee. When I got there though, it was awful. He acted as if I had committed some great crime just being there. He rushed me into his office and before I knew what was happening, he well, he hit me.”
Kevin’s jaw dropped. He had known Scotty had a pretty bad track record of choosing loser but this took the cake. “What?”
Scotty’s shoulders slumped and tears filled his eyes. “I was young and stupid and thought I was in love. I convinced myself that Matt was just stressed and he didn’t mean it but thinking back I know I was wrong. It wasn’t long before it started happening on a regular basis.”
Kevin was still in shock. “Why didn’t you get out? Why didn’t you tell someone?” The moment the words left his mouth he knew he had said the wrong thing when Scotty sent his an angry looking glare.
“It wasn’t that easy Kevin! Things like that aren’t supposed to happen to guys!”
“What do you mean things like that aren’t supposed to happen to guys? It can happen to anyone!”
“I know that now but at the time I guess I just thought that it was just women who got beat by their boyfriends and husbands and I took offence to it. I suppose I figured it made me seem, I don’t know, feminized, that I couldn’t take care of myself. That I was in a relationship like that.”
Kevin swallowed hard and took a moment to gather his thoughts. “Is that why you get so angry when I try and act all alpha male on you? You think it makes you seem more…girly?”
Scotty spared Kevin a small smile and nodded. “But I know you only do it because you love me and honestly, it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. I know now that it doesn’t make me any less of a man if I let you pay for drinks.”
Kevin reached over and took Scotty’s hand in his. “What happened next?”
All traces of lightheartedness left Scotty’s face. “Well, I finally got out. I came to my senses about Matt and I left him. I couldn’t very well go to the police because lets face it, they would have laughed in my face. So one day, I went to the office when I knew he was working and I told him that I was leaving town, and that I didn’t think it was a good idea if he contacted me again. As you can imagine he didn’t take it so well. To make matters worse, a co-worker of his walked in just as he was forcing me to kiss him. To cover up what he was doing he slammed me to the floor, called me a faggot, and told the other guy that I was trying to force myself on him.”
“What? And they believed him?” Kevin was outraged.
“Yup. Apparently Matt wasn’t as out of the closet as I was, had a wife and everything. The other guy asked if Matt was going to press charges but he said that he didn’t want it to get around that a homo had touched him. Instead they called security, they roughed me up a little and sent me out the door. I was still sitting in my car, shocked at what had happened, when Matt knocked on my window. I was stupid enough to open it when Matt said he wanted to apologize when in reality all he wanted to do was take me down a notch or two. He was panicked and crying and kept shouting at me that I must have done something to him to make him that way, that he wasn’t gay and that I had forced him to see me. I don’t remember much after that because he started hitting me again and I blacked out. When I came to the next day I was in the hospital and the cops had written off the attack as just another gay bashing. I never corrected them and the next day I was gone.”
Kevin didn’t know what to say. “I’m so sorry baby. I had no idea.”
“You weren’t supposed to. It’s not exactly something I’m proud of.” Scotty looked at Kevin, his eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry Kevin. I should have told you before now but I was just so…ashamed I guess.”
Kevin took Scotty’s face in his hands and gently kissed his mouth. “Oh baby you have no reason to be ashamed. You did nothing wrong.”
Scotty let out a sob and buried his face in the crook of Kevin’s shoulder. “Thank you so so so much for understanding Kev. You mean so much to me and I love you more than you can ever imagine.”
“I know, I know.” Kevin rubbed gentle circles on Scotty’s back until he calmed down. “He was there tonight wasn’t he? At the restaurant?”
Scotty didn’t answer but Kevin could feel him nodding and his neck. “Please don’t tell anyone. Even your family. Especially not your family…” The last words were muffled and heavy with sleep.
Kevin thought about it for a minute. Could he really keep something like this from his family? He was about to give Scotty his answer but realized at the last moment that his husband had already fallen asleep.
He’d find some way to fix this for Scotty, he had to. He was a Walker male, it was what they did best.-
