A/N- Hey everyone! I’m so very sorry about the long wait but RL interrupted my fanfic schedule. I unfortunately found myself writing a 14 page paper on the theories and practices of responsible government in Canada. Yup. It was as boring as you think it was. Anyways, here’s Chapter three, hope you enjoy!
Chapter Three- Telephone Tag
Kevin fiddled with his pen as he sat waiting for Robert to come back from a meeting with a Governor from another state. He sighed impatiently and checked his watch for the tenth time since he had arrived 15 minutes prior.
“Yes, alright. Okay. Seven it is, see you then.” Robert came into the room chatting on his phone as usual. He spotted Kevin sitting there and flipped the phone shut.
“Kevin, hi. What are you doing here? I thought you had the day off?” He walked around his desk and took a seat. “Something come up?”
“No, no. I just needed to get out the house, keep myself busy.”
Robert gave him a concerned look while flipping through some papers on his desk. “Everything alright?”
Kevin gave him a half hearted shrug. “I suppose, yes. Well no. Oh hell, I’m not entirely sure.”
“I almost hate to ask but is it anything you want to talk about?”
Kevin shot him a disbelieving look and Robert raised his hands in the air in self defense. “Hey, wasn’t it you that said something about us being brothers that just happen to have the words in law mixed in there.”
Kevin sighed. “It’s not really something I’m supposed to talk about.”
Robert set down his papers and gave Kevin a serious look. “Now I’m worried. All Walkers ever want to do is talk.”
“Well it’s actually Scotty that doesn’t want me to say anything.”
“Please don’t tell me you had another fight? I swear Kevin, sometimes you need to learn when to shut your mouth.”
Kevin shot Robert a dirty look. “First of all, why do you assume that I was the problem? And second of all, no, we didn’t have a fight.” He slouched down in his chair and frowned.
“Are you seriously pouting? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a grown man pout before.”
Kevin gave him an indignant look. “I’m not pouting, I’m just frustrated.”
“Look, you can tell me and get it out in the open or you can continue on pouting and I can call Nora to get it out of you.”
Kevin rolled his eyes. “Fine, but you cannot tell anyone! Especially not my mother, you know how she gets.”
“Alright, you have my word as a politician.”
“Ya, because that’s worth a whole heck of a lot.”
“Are you going to tell me or not?”
“It’s about Scotty. We were at a restaurant last night and he ran into an old boyfriend of his.”
Robert gave him a confused look and interrupted Kevin. “Please don’t tell me this is all about you getting jealous.”
“No its not. Can I continue without interruptions this time?”
Robert made the universal sign with his hands gesturing Kevin to continue. “By all means.”
“Anyways, it turns out that back when they were dating, this guy used to rough up Scotty quite a bit. Apparently he hadn’t quite come to terms with his sexuality and took it out on my poor husband.”
Robert didn’t know what to say. “This guy say anything to Scotty last night?”
Kevin nodded. “Made a couple vague threats, left a couple nice bruises on his arms where he grabbed him.”
“Did you have him arrested? Its sounds like you’d have enough to get an assault charge or something.”
“Nope. Didn’t have time. Scotty didn’t let me know until after we were at home. Didn’t even find out about the bruises until this morning.”
Robert shook his head in disgust. “Well let me know if there’s anything I can do and if Scotty has anymore trouble with this guy. What’s his name anyways? I’ll see what I can dig up on him.”
“Matthew Brookes.” Kevin stood up and reached across the desk placing a hand on Roberts shoulder. “Thanks Robert. I mean it.”
“Well like you said Kevin, we’re family now and seeing as your married to Scotty, I guess that makes him family as well.”
Kevin gave Roberts shoulder a final squeeze before taking a few steps towards the door. “And Robert, despite what I say sometimes, you’re a good guy. I’m glad you and Kitty worked out.”
Robert put his hand to his own chest and smirked. “Oh Kevin. That has to be the nicest thing you’ve ever said.”
Kevin glared at his brother in law. “Repeat it and I’ll deny I ever said it to the day I die.”
Like most secrets in the Walker household, Scotty’s didn’t last for very long. By 8:17 the following evening, everyone from Justin to Saul knew about Scotty’s dark past.
As for Scotty, he sat waiting patiently for his husband to return from the office, arms crossed and teeth bared.
He couldn’t believe that Kevin would betray his trust like that and tell his family about his past. He had only told Kevin because he thought that Kevin was mature enough not to go blabbing to everyone in his family.
As the clock struck 8:20, the front door opened and in walked Kevin himself.
He flipped on the lights and wearily watched as Scotty stood up and walked over to him.
“Oh, Hey Scotty. Thought you had to work tonight?” Kevin placed his keys down on the table and set his briefcase on the floor.
“I was. Had to leave early.” Scotty stood there with his arms crossed looking at Kevin. “Anything you want to tell me?”
Kevin stopped what he was doing to look his husband in the eye. “Uh, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why did you have to leave early?”
“I received a little phone call from Nora at work this evening.”
“What happened? Is everything alright over there? I still don’t see why you’d have to leave work for that?”
“She wanted to know if there was anything she could do to help me. Offered up her place to stay if I didn’t feel safe here with Matt still wandering around the streets.” Scotty shook his head disappointedly at Kevin. “How could you tell her Kevin? The only thing I asked of you was to keep your mouth shut but I guess that was too much to handle!”
Kevin’s jaw dropped. “I swear to God Scotty, I didn’t tell my mother. You have to believe me!”
“Oh, I know that it wasn’t Nora you told. I asked her and she said it was Sarah, who heard it from Kitty, who heard it from Robert.”
Kevin’s shoulders slumped. “I’m so sorry Scotty.”
Scotty’s eyes were filled with hurt. “Why Kevin? Why couldn’t you just listen to me this one time? You knew what I told you was very private for me.”
“I honestly didn’t-” Kevin swallowed hard. “No, you’re right. You asked me not to tell anyone about what happened to you and I betrayed your trust and for that, I’m sorry. I really am.”
Kevin stood still and stared into his husband’s eyes. He knew that he shouldn’t have told anyone but damn it, he was just so frustrated. Frustrated that he wasn’t there for Scotty when it happened, frustrated that he couldn’t hunt down Matt himself, and frustrated that he couldn’t do anything to help Scotty get over the pain.
Scotty took one last look at Kevin before promptly turning his back on him and grabbing his jacket of a nearby chair.
Kevin looked confused. “What? Where are you going?”
“Out.” Scotty opened the door and took one last look at Kevin. “I need some time. I’ll be back later tonight.”
“Scotty wait!” Kevin started, but it was too late and the door had closed.
Kevin walked over to the couch, sat down, and buried his face in his hands. When he told Robert he honestly thought he could trust him. Then again, Robert was pretty much a Walker by now and Kevin should have known that Walkers, himself included, were horrible secret keepers.
Kevin, not knowing what else to do, propped his feet up on the coffee table, grabbed the throw from the back of the couch, and settled in to wait for his husband. With any luck it wouldn’t be long before Scotty came back and realized that Kevin hadn’t really meant any harm in the first place.
Kevin jerked awake at the sound of his watch beeping and ran a hand over his bleary eyes. He sat up and tried to survey his surroundings. The watch on his wrist told him it was 3:15 and the apparent absence of his husband told him Scotty was still upset and had apparently gone off to bed without him. He pried himself off the couch and winced when he heard his joints crackle.
Taking every precaution to be quite, Kevin tip toed into his bedroom where he was expecting to find Scotty. Shocked, he looked around worriedly when he couldn’t be found.
“Scotty?” Kevin took a peek into the quite bathroom. “Scotty are you here?”
Now Kevin was starting to get a little more frantic. He went around the small apartment flicking on the lights as he went. A quick check around confirmed his worst ideas.
Scotty hadn’t come home last night.
Kevin tried to calm himself as he groped around for his cell phone. He flipped it open and with shaking hands dialed Scotty’s phone number.
It was probably nothing. Maybe Scotty stayed the night at his friends?
Then again, Scotty would have called. No matter how angry they were at each other they always called if they weren’t going to be home for the night.
Kevin chewed his lip in anticipation as more and more scenarios filled his head, each one worse than the last.
Hey! You’ve reached the number of Scotty-
Kevin flipped the phone closed and open again and quickly dialed the number again. Once more, the sound of Scotty’s voicemail filled his ear.
Kevin began to pace the floor worriedly. He didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t call Nora, she’d worry herself sick and he didn’t want to do that to her if nothing was actually wrong. His sisters were out of the question as half the time they were almost as bad as their mother.
That just left Justin, Tommy and Saul.
He didn’t want to worry Justin, he had enough on his plate as it was, and Saul was out of town for the weekend. Which just left Tommy, the one person Kevin really didn’t want to be indebted to.
Kevin took a deep breath before dialing in the numbers that would connect him to his brother. They may not be on the best of terms at the moment, but they were still family, he knew Tommy would see that.
Kevin exhaled deeply when he heard the sound of his half sleeping brother. This had better be good.
“Tommy, it’s me, Kevin.”
Kevin? What do you want? Is there something wrong with Mom?
“No, no. It’s umm, it’s Scotty.”
Scotty? Kevin could hear the alertness in Tommy’s voice that wasn’t there a moment ago. I heard what happened, is everything alright?
“Not really. We had a fight and I can’t find him.” Kevin could hear himself getting chocked up. “He said he’d be home last night but he isn’t here.”
There was a long pause on the phone, some rustling that sounded like Tommy getting out of bed, and finally, Tommy’s voice. “Are you at the Apartment? Gimmie 20 minutes.”
